How-to Projects

Wanting to fill a scratch or small dent?

Applying body filler can be easy and done correctly with care you will get a great finish ready for painting with ColorSpec’s Refinish Paint System.

Choosing the right body filler for your repair is the first step to getting a long-lasting repair. There are three main types for automotive repairs:

  • Lightweight – these fillers are great on scratches and small dents.
  • Fibreglass filler – these fillers are useful for tiny holes or tears in either metal or fiberglass.
  • Aluminium filler – these fillers contain microscopic aluminium particles making them suitable for larger repairs and dents

Once you’ve chosen the right filler for your repair, correct surface preparation, mixing of hardener to filler, application and finishing are the final steps. Watch our video below on to learn about these steps.

In the ColorSpec product range, Body Filler Lightweight is available, Fibreglass & Aluminium fillers are not available.

Planning to refinish a panel to match your car?

This is a very achievable project when you follow some simple steps. Some things you need to think about before tackling a project like this.

Equipment

Are you planning on using aerosol cans or air-operated spray equipment? Both will achieve a great finish but air-operated spray equipment will require a few additional items. We have a handy shopping list here so you can ensure you get all you need.

Time

This project will require about a day, add additional time if you need to complete a repair to the panel.

Location

You’ll need a dry, well ventilated space to spray the panel, preferably somewhere undercover. Weather while painting will also play a role as ColorSpec paints have a recommended temperature and humidity range to achieve the best results without issues like blooming.

Cost

You are going to need to use all 3 steps of the ColorSpec Refinish Paint System to complete this project, do your research, use the shopping list we have available for download to help identify what you have and what you need to buy.

Once you have thought about and are satisfied with your answers to these questions, research and knowledge is key. Watch the video below that’s relevant to your preferred painting method (aerosol or air-operated spray equipment) and read through our FAQ’s & Pro Tips before getting started, we also have a Tech Hotline available to ask any questions you need to.

Want to change the colour of your car?

This is quite a big job and will require advanced DIY skills. Some things you need to think about before tackling a project like this.

Equipment

We would recommend using air-operated spray equipment as you will get a better finish, easier vs using aerosols. If you don’t own appropriate air-operated spray equipment already that our shopping list will help guide you on what you will need.

Time

This project will require significant periods of time to complete as you will need to prepare the whole car. At a minimum this means sanding it fully before priming, sanding it after priming plus the time to apply primer, base coat & clear coat. If you have rust, deep scratch or dent repairs to make that will require additional time also.

Location

You will need a dry, well ventilated space to paint the car, preferably somewhere undercover. Weather while painting will also play a role as ColorSpec paints have a recommended temperature and humidity range to achieve the best results without issues like blooming. As this is going to be a multi-day project, where are you going to leave the car overnight? Leaving the car out in the elements over night or during inclement weather will affect the paint and leave you dissatisfied with the results.
